Our Goals & Objectives

Educational

Each year, Irondequoit Chapter awards a scholarship to deserving students who have graduated from an accredited high school in Monroe County, New York.  Our benefactor for this unique scholarship fund, Polly F. Burke, served as regent of our chapter, State Director of District VII, and New York State Vice Chairman of DAR Schools.  We conduct Good Citizens Award programs and promote Constitution Week in our local schools.  Our chapter also supports the Ensign Robert Wilson Chapter of the Children of the American Revolution (C.A.R.).

Historical

Our major ongoing historical project is the preservation of our historic 1837 Hervey Ely Chapter House.  The Hervey Ely house is a designated landmark of the City of Rochester, New York, and it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.  The Landmark Society of Western New York has designated the Hervey Ely House as one of the top three houses to be preserved in the Third Ward preservation district in Rochester.

We are caretakers for a historic Revolutionary War Monument located in Mt. Hope Cemetery in Rochester. This monument is a tribute to the soldiers of General John Sullivan's campaign, specifically the members of Captain Thomas Boyd's scouting party, who fell at Groveland, Livingston County, New York, on September 13, 1779.  The remains of Captain Boyd, four fellow officers, his Oneida Indian guide, and nine volunteer riflemen are buried at this site. In October 2006, we celebrated a 100th anniversary re-dedication of this monument.

Patriotic

Each year, our chapter sponsors Constitution Week, requesting a proclamation by the mayor of the City of Rochester.  On Memorial Day we decorate the graves of our DAR Real Daughters and patriots buried in Mt. Hope Cemetery, including our most famous Daughter, Susan B. Anthony.  Members take part and participate in the Mt. Hope Cemetery Revolutionary War Tour and the Waterloo Memorial Day Parade, held each year.  In November, we observe Veterans Day by participating in the county-wide memorial service at Blue Cross Arena at the War Memorial.

National Defense

Irondequoit Chapter honors the ROTC at two local colleges—The College at Brockport State University of New York and the University of Rochester—by awarding certificates and medals to deserving cadets each year.   We are dedicated to supporting our flag and the soldiers who serve our country. We participate in DAR Project Patriot, a national committee that supports the wounded military personnel at the Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Germany and active woman in the military.
